"The Examined Life" at the Providence Art Club

WARWICK, R.I. – A series of  new paintings and drawings  by well known artist Nancy Gaucher-Thomas will be on exhibit in “The Examined Life” at  the Providence Art Club June 12 through July 1, 2011. These paintings celebrate the artist’s fascination with her subject. Oil paintings by co-exhibitor and painter, Marjorie Ball will also be on display during the three week long exhibit.

Artist and instructor Nancy Gaucher-Thomas, a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, has recently turned to creating charcoal portrait drawings on Mylar, a film-like substance she admires for the way it “grabs” the charcoal, lending itself to a wide range of values from densest black to the subtle gradations of shadow, and its ability to create areas of clean light. Using this material, she creates a wide-ranging visual vocabulary based on the tonal values of a single color and focusing on form and essence. She finds an endless source of inspiration in portraiture, choosing subjects with whom she feels a sense of visual kinship or rapport. The sense of identification with her subject is a critical element in creating powerfully spare portraits of subjects focused meditatively inward or others who observe the world from a distance.
